Route 22 Stop Results In DWI, Drug Possession Charges For Motorist, Passenger

A motorist and passenger are facing charges after a traffic stop on Route 22, according to police.

An officer with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department allegedly observed a vehicle commit a traffic violation on State Route 22 in the Town of Patterson on Saturday, April 20 around 12 a.m.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and allegedly observed an alcoholic odor coming from the driver, identified as 38-year-old Carlos Diaz of Waterbury, Connecticut.

There was also a distinct marijuana smell coming from the vehicle, according to police.

Police say they asked repeatedly for Diaz to exit the vehicle and submit to a field sobriety test, but he refused.

During the stop, police say the vehicle’s passenger, identified as 33-year-old Kevin McDonough of Waterbury, Connecticut, was found to be in possession of concentrated cannabis, marijuana and hypodermic needles with an amount of glassine envelopes.

Both Diaz and McDonough were arrested and transported to the Putnam County Correctional Facility for processing. Diaz was charged with:

  • Driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor
  • Operating a vehicle with a BAC of .08 or more, a misdemeanor
  • Second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor

McDonough was charged with:

  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation

Diaz and McDonough are scheduled to appear at the Town of Patterson Justice Court on a later date.
